Studying at home is so important, but often students find studying boring or they study ineffectively. Good study habits can vastly improve grades. Tip 1: Use flash cards! Having small “sound bites” of information is less intimidating to study and aids in memorization. Tip 2: Create a practice test for yourself. When you start thinking about how questions and answers are formed, the material sinks in.

How do you study best? Any tips to share?

Daylight Savings is approaching! It’s so important that we schedule our days so that we get the most out of them. Did you know that William Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets in 24 years? He would never have accomplished all that if he spent most of his free time watching TV! Do you have a project you’re trying to accomplish in your free time? If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it?

Harrison School District Two Gifted and Talented Student Blog: January Blog Topic

Harrison School District Two Gifted and Talented Student Blog: January Blog Topic:
Happy New Year!  It is that time of year when people make resloutions or set goals for the new year.  Many people make resolutions to exercise more, lose weight, save money, or spend more time with family and friends.  I decided that I would watch less television this year.  I outlined a plan that included reading a book a month, listing my favorite shows and only watching them as well as setting mandatory times that the television had to be off.  I set a goal and outlined a plan to get there.  The blog topic this month is about goal setting or making resolutions.  What is a goal you have set for yourself for 2013?  How do you plan to achieve your goal?  If you have not set a goal for yourself this year, now is the time to read and get some ideas.  You goals can be academic, health or activity based.  What is your goal and how will you make sure you are successful in achieving it?

November Blog Topic

It is that time of year when we are all thinking about what we are thankful for.  That's right it is Thanksgiving time! We are very thankful for all of our students in Harrison and very thankful for our Gifted and Talented students.  This month I want you to reflect on what you have been thankful for in your education.  As a gifted student, what educational opportunities are you thankful for?  Also, you know that there is a wishbone in the turkey and they say that whoever gets the wishbone gets to break it with another person.  The person that breaks off the biggest piece will have their wish granted!  Along with what you are thankful for in your education, tell me what your greatest wish would be as you continue your education(No wishing for money unless it is a scholarship to a college on your wish list!)

Harrison School District Two Gifted and Talented Student Blog: October GT Blog Topic

Harrison School District Two Gifted and Talented Student Blog: March GT Blog Topic:
Hello gifted students!  I am Erika Tunson and I am the new Elementary Gifted and Talented Coordinator.  I am going to be updating the blog monthly and I am anxious to get your posts!  This month I will post the topic but I would ask that you write some topics you would be interested in blogging about at the end of your post this month.  Next month I hope to use a student generated topic!
Let's get figurative!  I mean let's play with figurative language this month. When I was in 5th grade I was identified as a gifted student so I understand what it is like to be gifted in a classroom where most students are not.  Create a metaphor a simile for the following statement:  Being a gifted student is...
My example:  Being a gifted student is like being a sunny, warm day in the late fall.  It is unexpected, even unusual and everyone loves it.  They even comment on how lovely the day is.  The problem is it is uncommon and it could change and be cold and gray the next day.  Then, people are disappointed.

Many gifted students see their giftedness as a double-edged sword. What do you see as the pros to being gifted? What do you see as the cons to being gifted?

Bonus question: What type of figurative language can you find in the question above? :)
